20 Months Old

Sleep is going better. We got Daniel a toddler bed and finally put it together two nights ago. He loves it! He also loves all the extra space it made in his room (we had a full-sized bed in there before). When the full bed was taken out, he ran around his room like a crazy man, yelling, “Running!”

His new sleep patterns aren’t consistent yet, but they’re certainly better than before. A couple nights ago, he slept in his own bed until 5:45 in the morning before climbing into bed with us and asking for milk. Last night, he came to our bed around 2:45. He still cries sometimes when I tell him, “No more milk until morning,” but he’s over it within a few minutes–unless it’s later in the morning. After about 5:30, he won’t take no for an answer. I think he’s probably hungry by that point, so his request is more to fill a need than for comfort. One of these days he’ll eat more food and I won’t have to worry about him starving in the middle of the night.

Going to sleep has been a bit of an issue–only in that it’s been taking him over an hour to fall asleep. He mostly cooperates. He takes his bath, gets his jammies on, reads some stories, has some milk, uses the potty, says his prayers, and then tosses and turns, occasionally calling out, “Mommy-o!” to make sure I’m still nearby. The hour+ countdown doesn’t start until after prayers–making for a long night for mom & dad.

I think the problem is getting started on our night routine too late. The problem with doing it any earlier is that Dan doesn’t get home until around 6:30. Then we eat, play a bit and then start the routine. The only thing we could cut out is play time–but it’s important for Dan & Daniel to get that quality time with each other. So, I don’t really know what to do about that.

Tonight, Daniel didn’t fall asleep until about 10:30pm. After he fell asleep, I tiptoed to his bed to pull the covers up around him and he was cuddling with his stuffed penguin. I’ve never seen him sleep with a stuffed toy before. He likes to hug them and play with them during the day, but until tonight, he’s not preferred them at night. I wish I could have gotten a picture of it, but there was no way I was going to disturb his sleep. Perhaps I’ll catch it at nap time one of these days.
